Over Kill Much?

This story goes back to 2008 apparently. The story goes like this according to CNN.

Thirty-one year old Jodi Arias went to her boyfriend Travis Alexander's home shot him in the face, stabbed him some 27 times and then for good measure slit his throat from ear to ear. Over kill much? Travis' closest friends found his body in the shower. In the washing machine law enforcement located, a camera that had nude photo's of the victim and the suspect as well as photos of the suspect with the victim as he lay dying. This according to CNN.

From what a friend told investigators, Travis had caught Jodi breaking into his Facebook account. The friend recounted a question he had asked Travis after Travis had sent a harsh response to the suspect. The question he asked, "are you afraid she's going to hurt you?" Four or five days later Travis went missing before the friends found him dead in the shower.

Jodi has given differing stories to law enforcement, the first being that she wasn't there when he was killed. I guess she forgot that lie, because she then said that she was there, that two people broke into the home and assaulted them. Finally the last story is that she did kill him but it was self defense.
Really? Did she have any defensive wounds at all? I guess we shall see if her trial ever begins.

Her trial was scheduled to begin this February, however her lawyer dropped the case and a new lawyer had to be appointed. Why did the first one drop her case? How did an appointed death penalty qualified lawyer drop a case she was appointed to? A new qualified death penalty attorney has now been appointed. The case is now slated to start on October 17th.

Now here's my questions and my thinking.

First off, the murder took place in 2008 according to CNN. So why then is this trial taking so long to get into court? I understand the fact that courts are busy, however there is no excuse whatsoever for a trial to take this long to begin. Even if the murder happened on December 31st 2008, that still puts this trial (at this point) three years drawn out. That is unacceptable in my opinion. Even if Jodi didn't request a speedy trial that is no excuse for prolonging the family the right to see justice of some kind.

On the off chance that Jodi was not the person that committed the crime; then three years of her life have been taken away from her by the accusations while she waits for her fair trial. Our judicial system needs an overhaul if cases are taking this long to go forth.

Now on to my next point. If Travis was stabbed 27 times, did Jodi have any cuts to her hands? I'm not saying she didn't I wasn't there when she was arrested. Most people who use a knife in an assault end up with cuts to their hands as well. I am interested to know the angle of the slash to Travis' throat. Was the angle up or down or was it fairly even? Was Jodi taller than Travis, or was she shorter? Is the slash wound consistent with Jodi's hand usage?

Three different types of wounds; shot, stabbed, and throat slashed. This gives the clue that this murder was in fact one of a personal nature. Twenty-seven stab wounds tells us that it was a crime of passion. Whoever committed this terrible crime had a personal vendetta against Travis. Was being caught hacking a Facebook page enough to set the killer off? People have been known to kill with less "reason".

Why as a society are we turning to murder in so many varying cases? It seems as if the new trend is along these lines. If you don't like your spouse anymore because he left the seat up; "that's easily handled by murder". Why would anyone be stupid enough to think that something in life so trivial as that would call for murder?

In so many cases we see murders walking out of court as free men and women. In other cases we see innocent men and women being led out in handcuffs only to be exonerated many years later when new evidence determines their innocence. Someone once said that if "one guilty person walks free, we have failed". I say, if one innocent person spends one day in prison or worse is put to death, We HAVE failed. We are still to this day hearing of innocent people being freed from prison after 20 or more years in prison. When DNA is proving so many of not being guilty of the crime that a jury has convicted them of.

Our judicial system is in need of change. We have all known this for years, but how do we change the only system we have ever known? I don't have that answer. I wish I did.
